Located on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard, VMS was founded in 1975 by a group of dedicated, determined parents who embraced the principles and educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori.  After being housed at several locations, the School purchased its present facility at 286 Main Street and Tashmoo Avenue in Vineyard Haven.  In 1995 the School added to its Primary program for children ages 2.9 through 6 an Elementary class serving children ages 6 to 9 years old.  Currently this elementary classroom is the only private elementary option for parents on the Island.

The primary responsibility of the Board of Directors is to see that the School operates in the best interests of its students, teachers, and parents. The Board sets the purpose and policies of the School, ensures its financial stability, plans for its future, and hires the Director of the School. The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the School.  The all volunteer Board is typically made up of a current and alumni parents and community members. The Board meets monthly throughout the school year to oversee school business decisions, future planning and to organize fundraising events. Terms for office are typically three years with each Board member bringing in a replacement when their term has ended. The Board works together with the Director to assure that VMS is operating to its fullest capabilities.
